About Part III

Part III, “Metadata Services,” retains most of the content from the previous edition.

With the material in chapter 6, introduced in the second edition, highlighting metadata services as infrastructure and metadata as Linked Data, this edition has restructured the section Metadata as Linked Data (6.4), presenting the five Ws and one H (what, why, who, where, when, and how) along with multiple real cases. The new functionality brought by implementing the Linked Data principles, the importance of knowledge organization systems (KOS), the approaches for optimizing metadata discovery, and increasing findability are addressed.

Similarly, in both chapter 7 on metadata quality and chapter 8 on interoperability, new sections related to Linked Data have been updated. We understand that it is still impossible to include complete coverage of the subject of Linked Data within this book; thus, its sections focus on the areas most concerned with metadata.
