Pan Yuliang
1895.06.14~1977.07.22
Birthplace / Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China

A native of Yangzhou, Jiangsu, Pan Yuliang’ s original name was Chen Xiuqing (others have said Yang Xiuqing). She later changed her name to Zhang Yuliang and, after marriage, she took her husband’s family name and became known as Pan Yuliang and Pan Shixiu.

Pan Yuliang was a pioneer, and one of the first women to accept new art education during the early Republican period in China. Her early years were spent in obscurity and poverty. It was only after marrying and receiving support from her husband Pan Zanghua that she was able to gradually develop her painting career.

Pan Yuliang received her education from the instructor Hong Ye of the Shanghai College of Painting (later changed to Shanghai Fine Arts School). She was formally accepted by the Division of Western Painting at Shanghai Fine Arts School in 1920, and became the school's first female student since its founding. Pan was also taught by Wang Jiyuan and Zhu Qizhan.

The following year, Pan received government funding to study abroad in France. She became the first student at the Institut Franco-Chinois de Lyon (a foreign division of the Beijing Sino-French University founded by work-study advocates Cai Yuanpei, Li Shizeng, and Wu Zhihui). Later, she transferred to institutes such as the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and in Paris, and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. The author Su Xunlin and the painter Xu Beihong were also Chinese students who studies in France at this time.

Pan Yuliang was famous for her various artistic depictions of women. Many of these images were self-portraits. The subjects of her paintings were composed with concise yet substantial outlines, in brilliant and beautiful colors. Her style combined both Chinese and Western painting styles, once described by Chen Duxiu as “New Sketching Style”.

Pan Yuliang returned to her home country in 1928, where she committed herself to the promotion of modern Western art in China. She served as the Director of the Western Painting Division at the Shanghai Fine Arts School, taught graduate students at the Yiyuan Painting Institute, and served as a professor at both the Art Department of National Central University in Nanjing and the Xinhua University of Fine Art. Through her art and teaching, she had a profound influence on China’s Western painting movement.

In 1937, Pan Yuliang ended her teaching career and returned to France, settling in Paris. She, along with others such as Zhao Wuji, Zhu Dequn, and Chang Yu were all recognized as famous contemporary painters who studied in France.
